The Municipality of Braga is the local government authority of Braga, one of the largest and youngest cities in Portugal, located in the northwest of the country. With roots stretching back over two thousand years to Roman Bracara Augusta, Braga has continually reinvented itself — most recently transforming from a traditional industrial base into a recognised hub of innovation, technology and sustainability. Today, with approximately 2,384 municipal employees, the Municipality plays a leading regional role in economic development, education, culture and quality of life. The Municipality's environmental work is coordinated through its Environment, Climate Change and Animal Policy Division, which runs a year-round programme of initiatives directly relevant to (RE)natured cities. In the area of urban greening and biodiversity, the annual Florestar Braga campaign mobilises citizens for urban forest planting and microforest creation with native species, while a parallel programme engages local businesses in adopting public forest areas, combining native planting with invasive species control. River ecosystem restoration and citizen science are pursued through Projeto Rios, in which community groups adopt stretches of local streams for seasonal ecological monitoring and habitat improvement, and through Oxigenar Braga, which coordinates annual large-scale river cleanups and riparian restoration along the Este and Cávado rivers. Environmental education and citizen engagement form a consistent thread across all activities, including showcookings promoting sustainable food, circularity workshops, composting sessions in partnership with the University of Minho, and teacher training on topics such as climate change, the circular economy and organic gardening. This combination of hands-on ecological action and structured adult education gives the Municipality strong practical experience in designing and delivering the types of learning activities foreseen under (RE)natured cities.
